Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Sunday urged the entire population to join the "COVID-19 does not kill by itself. Let us not be accomplices" campaign launched by the Government to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.

"We are introducing a new campaign and we want everyone to help us," said the President from Tumbes region, where he arrived to supervise the implementation of a hospital facility.

The Head of State stressed that the message is aimed mainly at irresponsible people who, despite the state of health emergency, attend parties, discos, birthday celebrations and other social gatherings with no face masks or social distancing.

However, he noted that most Peruvians are responsible and that only a small sector of the population fails to comply with the Government's provisions.

"However, although small (this sector of the population), composed of 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 people, it continues to spread it (the disease), so this campaign is aimed at them. 'Let us not be accomplices' is a frontal campaign that tells irresponsible citizens —clearly and directly— that COVID-19 does not kill by itself but needs accomplices," he explained.

The Peruvian leader affirmed that the Government will promote this campaign at the national level but called on regional governors, as well as provincial and district mayors, to make joint efforts.

In this regard, he said many communication campaigns can be carried out, but people's commitment and responsibility are needed to achieve the goals.

Remarks were made after he monitored the functioning of the inpatient unit at the EsSalud Village in Tumbes region.
