Peru's BVL: Trade war has caused 15% drop in copper prices so far in 2019

09:02 | Lima, Jun. 18.

The trade war between the United States and China has resulted in a 15% decrease in copper prices so far in 2019, Lima Stock Exchange (BVL) General Manager Francis Stenning affirmed on Monday.

"The trade war is an affair that has a great impact on global markets, as well as on Peru, since they (the United States and China) are our main trade partners," the officer expressed.

In this sense, Stenning indicated companies' results will depend on the outcome of the talks between both countries

Likewise, the BVL General Manager stressed that economic agents must keep a close eye on what happens in this trade conflict, even if the end is difficult to predict

"It is very difficult to quantify the impact, but it can be observed on direct matters, such as how much it has affected commodities. However, if an agreement is reached by the end of the month, then prices will rise again," he added.

"Investments, like in all countries, are based on trust and the certainty each one (entrepreneur) has with regard to the place one is investing in," Stenning concluded.
