15:09 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), Feb. 23.
The overflow of Chullo ravine in the city of Arequipa reportedly left more than 1,200 homes flooded with mud and stones along its course, which runs through Cayma, Yanahuara, Cercado de Arequipa, and Sachaca districts, the
Arequipa Province Municipality's Disaster Risk Management Office reported on Monday.
According to the agency's preliminary report, rainwater and runoff from the ravine overflow caused damage to homes, streets, and avenues in the districts mentioned.

Heavy rainfall recorded in Arequipa province's upper areas activated ravines on Misti volcano that flowed into the Chullo ravine in the city of Arequipa, causing serious damage.
The Chullo ravine overflowed on Sunday, February 22, near the Rosario I and II residential areas in Cerro Colorado.
Rainwater continued along its course and overflowed again by the Buena Vista neighborhood on Calle Grande, within the Yanahuara jurisdiction, where heavy rains caused serious damage last Thursday, February 19.

Arequipa Region Governor Rohel Sanchez visited the affected area along with the ministers of Housing, Construction and Sanitation; Transportation and Communications; Defense; and Agrarian Development and Irrigation, as they toured zones impacted by the Chullo ravine activation.
The delegation later arrived in the Buena Vista neighborhood and Calle Grande, near the Concordia Bridge in Yanahuara district, where officials assessed firsthand the damage caused by the influx of mud and debris.
The governor and the ministers coordinated immediate actions to assist affected families and, where possible, accelerate the restoration of basic services in the impacted areas, some of which have been without electricity and drinking water for over three days.
During the tour, Housing Minister Wilder Sifuentes was asked about the request to declare a state of emergency in Arequipa.
He said the issue would be addressed at the first Council of Ministers session.

During the visit, authorities coordinated immediate actions to assist affected families and accelerate the restoration of basic services in the impacted areas.
Meanwhile, local governments in Cayma, Yanahuara, Cercado, and Sachaca continue to assess damage caused by the rains and provide assistance to affected residents.
