All crew members and passengers aboard the Mi-17 helicopter, which was declared missing on Sunday, February 22, after losing radio contact, died after the aircraft was found this morning in Caraveli province, southern Arequipa region, the
Peruvian Air Force (FAP) reported.
According to Official Statement No. 002-2026, following intensive search efforts, the aircraft was located near the town of Chala Viejo, in Chala district.
Rescue personnel confirmed that all occupants died due to the severity of the impact.
The recovery of the bodies and the wrecked aircraft was carried out by FAP Special Forces patrols, in coordination with the Peruvian National Police (PNP).
Among the victims are four crew members: FAP Major Sergio Danner Paucar Centurion; FAP Ensign Luis Fernando Huertas Carcamo; First Non-Commissioned Officer Kamila Chapi Anchapuri Jove; and Second Non-Commissioned Officer Leiner Aguirre Huaman.
Eleven passengers were among the victims, including FAP Colonel Javier Nole Gonzales (50); Luis Rodriguez Romero (49); N. R. R. (17); F. N. R. (15); Elisa Bemal Paredes (49); G. T. B. (14); F. T. B. (14); M. G. M. (14); Zoila Fernandez Medina (45); M. G. F. (14); and A. G. F. (3).
The military institution said the helicopter was heading to Arequipa to conduct search and rescue operations, as well as provide support in response to flooding, river overflows, and other phenomena affecting this region.
Likewise, it was engaged in training activities for the Peruvian Air Force cadet parachuting course.
In the statement, the FAP High Command expressed its condolences to the victims’ families, fellow service members, and loved ones.
It also announced the immediate activation of the Accident Investigation Board to determine the exact causes of the crash.
Finally, the FAP said it joins the national mourning over the loss of these Peruvians in the line of duty.
