Trade between Peru and
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies reached a record high of US$58 billion in 2018, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez informed.
"APEC is
Peruvian exports' most important market (accounting for 62% of the total). In 2018, exports to APEC neared US$30 billion, a record figure," the official expressed.
In this sense, the Inca country exported minerals (63%), farming products (11%), oil and gas (9%), fishery products (8%), and textiles (3%).
Meanwhile,
imports of meta-mechanic products (37%), chemicals (17%), oil (14%), among others, amounted to over US$27 billion.
Likewise, traditional and
non-traditional exports broke records in 2018, US$23.435 billion and US$6.445 billion, respectively.
Mining (US$18.914 billion), farming (US$3.169 billion), and fishery (US$2.526 billion) sectors also posted record figures.
Peru is currently one of the world's largest fruit exporters. In 2018, fruit exports totaled over US$3 billion, of which 54% (US$1.65 billion) went to APEC economies.
Markets
Furthermore, Peruvian exports to the APEC region increased 11%, underpinned by greater shipments to Japan (16%), South Korea (15%), the United States (14%), and China (14%).
In 2018, Peru imports from APEC expanded for the second year in a row (11%) driven by greater purchases of diesel (28%), plastics and articles thereof (21%), and hard yellow corn (6%).
Peru has been an APEC member since 1998 and was the host country of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, both in 2008 and 2016.
