Next week, Peru will have received 10 million doses of vaccines against COVID-19, Health Minister Oscar Ugarte announced on Friday during the startup of immunization of citizens aged 58 and 59.

"Thanks to the arrival of 497,250 doses of the Pfizer brand last night, we have (so far) received a total of 9.6 million vaccine doses. The coming week we will receive another 497,250 doses, thus exceeding the 10 million doses," he explained from a vaccination center in Lima's Chorrillos district.

The government official stressed that —as these supplies are arriving quickly and being distributed in the same way— significant progress has been made with the vaccination of the populations prioritized by the Government, some of whom are fully immunized.

Exceeding goals

"As a goal, President Sagasti had proposed vaccinating all adults over 60 years of age until July 28, as well as all those who are on the frontline: health workers, police, firefighters, the army, etc., including patients with some comorbidity. That goal has practically been reached; that is why we are moving to those over 50 years of age," he indicated.

Ugarte also stressed that this could not have been achieved without the support of local governments and the various institutions endorsing this important process, which will be focused on people over 50 years of age.

"For the Ministry of Health, this is a significant moment because we are starting to vaccinate the 50-year-old group, which is more numerous than the previous ones. Therefore, it is being divided (into groups)," he explained.
