More than 65% of the Peruvian population will have received both vaccine doses against COVID-19 by the beginning of the fourth quarter this year, thus achieving herd immunity against the virus, Deputy Benefits-Health Insurance Minister Bernardo Ostos projected on Wednesday.

"With the guaranteed doses and the production (of vaccinations) that we are reaching, above 100,000 per day, we must be exceeding 65% of the population vaccinated by the beginning of the fourth quarter," Ostos expressed from an immunization center in Lima's Barranco district.

The official confirmed that on June 19 the vaccination of people suffering from cancer and HIV will start in Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao.

In the case of cancer patients, they will be vaccinated differently and in accordance with the stage of their disease.

"In some cases, they will get vaccinated at the facilities of the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN) and the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud), at Rebagliati Hospital. Those, who are in better controlled stages, will be inoculated at vaccination centers in Lima," he specified.

The official added that people with HIV will be immunized at the Reference Centers for Sexually Transmitted Infections (Cerits), which are duly identified. Therefore, a program has been designed.

Vaccination of people over 50 years of age

The official reported that the immunization against COVID-19 will begin on June 20 for people aged above 50 in Arequipa. Thus, he called on the population to comply with receiving both doses.

"So that they are fully covered and protected. The second dose is the one that completes our protection. Be careful, the possibility of getting infected is not ruled out; however, the possibility of migrating to severe and serious stages and hospitalization cases is dismissed," he stressed.

Denies third wave

Lastly, Ostos clarified that the country is not facing a third wave of coronavirus and stressed that infections and deaths have been declining for nine continuous weeks.
