There is a "pronounced decrease" in infections and deaths during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it does not imply lowering our guard, Health Minister Oscar Ugarte affirmed on Friday.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official said this decrease is reflected in the amount of provinces at extreme risk level, which will be reduced from 33 to 16 as of May 31.

Last Wednesday, Education Minister Ricardo Cuenca announced that —given the reduction in infections and deaths if compared to the previous three weeks— eight provinces of Loreto region will join the moderate level and only 16 will be at extreme risk from May 31 to June 20.

The 16 provinces will be: Aymaraes (Apurimac region); Caylloma and Islay (Arequipa); Lucanas and Parinacochas (Ayacucho); Chota and San Ignacio (Cajamarca); Canchis (Cusco); Chepen and Otuzco (La Libertad); Tambopata (Madre de Dios); Morropon, (Piura); Melgar, San Roman, and Yunguyo (Puno); and Moyobamba (San Martin).

While the provinces at moderate (lowest risk) level are: Alto Amazonas, Datem del Marañon, Loreto, Mariscal Ramon Castilla, Maynas, Putumayo, Requena, and Ucayali (Loreto region).
