Peru: U.S. donates school supplies to students in Lima

13:47 | Lima, Jun. 7.

The U.S. Embassy in Peru has donated 16,000 school kits, 300 backpacks, and 10,000 English/Spanish dictionaries to Lima's Regional Office of Education (DRELM).

These school supplies are aimed at new students starting classes on June 10 in 94 schools across Lima Metropolitan area.

In a ceremony at Abraham Ronald Poma School based in Surco district, Deputy Pedagogical Management Minister Patricia Andrade said this school is one of the 94 educational institutions applying the new school calendar.

This is an opportunity to learn mainly for out-of-school children and those who failed to begin classes on March 11.

"This proves that, when our diverse peoples get together, they can combine efforts towards one goal of providing educational opportunities for boys and girls," she underlined.

For his part, U.S. Ambassador to Peru Krishna Urs underscored the Andean nation's attitude of welcome towards 800,000 Venezuelan migrants, 100,000 of whom are children of school age.

According to the diplomat, the S/166,000 (around US$49,700) donation was made by U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

He said "the United States, Venezuela, and Peru share the same neighborhood," so things happening in one country have an effect on the others.

The event was also attended by the Guaido administration's Venezuelan Ambassador Carlos Scull.
