Peru to host Artemis Accords Workshop on May 13–14

01:01 | Lima, May. 9.

Peru was selected to host the 2026 Artemis Accords Workshop, an international event that will bring together representatives and specialists involved in space cooperation. The designation recognizes the South American country's commitment to the peaceful use of outer space and its growing strategic role in Latin America.

On its social media accounts, the National Commission for Aerospace Research and Development (Conida) highlighted that the selection reflects the momentum Peru has been giving to international cooperation and the strengthening of its scientific and technological capabilities in the space sector.

At a press conference, Conida confirmed that the Artemis Accords Workshop will take place on May 13 and 14. It will aim to promote dialogue on responsible space use, as well as expand the participation of Latin American countries in international initiatives related to space exploration.

Important role of Peru and Latin America

"The international community is recognizing the role of countries with emerging capabilities that are active in the space sector, and this time it was Peru's turn. That will allow signatory countries from the region to attend in person. We have 90% of the countries in the region confirmed to attend the workshop, and that is an important message for our country and the Latin American region," said CONIDA Chief, Peruvian Air Force Major General Roberto Melgar Sheen.

Among the factors that favored Peru's selection is its strategic geographic location in South America, considered key to strengthening regional integration in space and science-related matters.

In addition, NASA values the growth of Peruvian capabilities in space research and technology.

According to Conida, the country has institutions and a steadily developing scientific community, which has made it possible to consolidate projects related to Earth observation and technological innovation.

The agency also stressed that Peru is positioning itself as a regional diplomatic platform to promote Latin American participation in the Artemis Accords, an international initiative aimed at fostering cooperation and best practices in space exploration.

Why is it important for Peru to be part of the Artemis Accords?

Peru joined the Artemis Accords on May 30, 2024. As of May, 66 nations are part of the Artemis Accords.

Among the benefits of joining the Artemis Accords is the strengthening of Peru's space sector.

This includes the development of infrastructure, specialized professionals, and domestic technology linked to space activities.

Another important aspect is international cooperation.

Participation in these accords allows Peru to integrate into a global network of countries collaborating on space missions, facilitating opportunities for scientific research and technology transfer.

Likewise, the country enhances its international standing and gains a greater presence in discussions on the sustainable and responsible use of outer space.

Established in 2020, the Artemis Accords bring together countries committed to peaceful, transparent, and sustainable exploration, in line with the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.

The organization of the workshop is the result of joint work between Conida and the Foreign Affairs Ministry, with the collaboration of NASA and the U.S. State Department.
