Peruvian Soccer Federation (FPF) President Edwin Oviedo affirmed the board will do its best to convince Argentina-born Ricardo Gareca to remain as the team coach thru the entire 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar process.

In this sense, Oviedo pointed out the red-white squad's last World Cup match against Australia marked the termination of Gareca's contract, which was signed in 2015 for the whole 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia process.

"We, as the Peruvian Soccer Federation, will do our best to retain Ricardo Gareca," he told Latina TV channel.

In addition, Oviedo noted the love that Gareca feels for the team, as well as for his work "is helping a lot since he takes into account many factors, such as being comfortable working in Peru."

"We have met with his lawyer; we have taken the first step. Now we are ready to start negotiations and fully prepared to renew (his contract) for the next World Cup tournament," the officer noted.

"I think he (Gareca) has not taken a vacation after all this time. He will take a few days off, and we must respect that, but I have confidence, as head of the Federation, that we will do everything possible to retain him for the next four years," he added.

As is known, the strategist guided the red-white squad to a long-awaited World Cup qualification after 36 years

Regarding the presence of FPF Sports Manager Juan Carlos Oblitas in the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Oviedo stated his contract —as well as those of the rest of technical team members— "will be renewed because they did an outstanding job."
