Peru seeks to position itself as key player in U.S. energy security

Energy and Mines Minister Waldir Ayasta carried out an extensive agenda of activities in Washington, D.C., aimed at positioning Peru as a key player in energy security and critical minerals, as well as a reliable destination for investment.

As part of his agenda, the Peruvian government official participated in the "USOAS Energy Forum: Advancing Energy Security and Economic Integration in the Americas" forum.

The event was organized by the United States Department of Energy and said country's Permanent Mission to the Organization of American States (OAS).


In that context, the minister held meetings with experts from the energy and mining sectors, exchanging views on energy security, critical minerals, and opportunities for regional cooperation.

The talks sought to strengthen technical cooperation and promote the exchange of knowledge and best practices in the use and development of renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower.

At another meeting, Minister Ayasta held a protocolary discussion with Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Secretary General Gerardo Corrochano.

The two officials discussed the importance of continuing to strengthen cooperation ties between the institution and Peru, particularly in the mining and energy sectors.


He was also accompanied by Peru's Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Rodolfo Coronado, during meetings with the multilateral organization's Assistant Secretary General, Laura Gil, and United States Permanent Representative Leandro Rizzuto.

Minister Ayasta also held a working meeting with Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) representatives, led by Miguel Coronado, manager of the Andean Region at the IDB.

The talks addressed the LACMinerals initiative, a program aimed at strengthening the mining sector in Latin America and the Caribbean.

During the meeting, participants discussed opportunities for cooperation in developing value chains, promoting sustainable investment, and advancing projects related to critical minerals.

Earlier, the Cabinet member met with Enrique Millan-Mejia and Martin Cassinelli, researchers at the Atlantic Council, one of the leading think tanks in the United States.

The talks focused on Peru's investment opportunities, challenges related to energy security and sovereignty, as well as strengthening cooperation and the country's role as a key player in critical minerals across the region.

During his second day of activities, Minister Ayasta met with U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) Chief Policy Officer Caroline Vik.

The meeting focused on investment and financing opportunities for projects related to infrastructure, critical minerals, energy, economic security, and strengthened cooperation.


Finally, he held talks with the World Bank's Regional Director for Infrastructure for Latin America and the Caribbean, Maria Marcela Silva, and Roger Schlotterer, Manager of Policies and Regulations for the Metals and Minerals Department.

They discussed issues related to development projects and the country mining strategy promoted by the World Bank.
