The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, participated in the 2026 National Multi-Hazard Drill from the Government Palace in Lima on Friday.

The exercise, which began at 10:00 a.m. (local time), aims to strengthen the preparedness and response capabilities of the entities that make up the National Disaster Risk Management System (SINAGERD).

It will also enable the population to learn the appropriate way to respond efficiently and promptly to hazards caused by natural events or human activity.

This activity was held to commemorate the 56th anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck off the coast of Chimbote, in Ancash region, on May 31, 1970.

The earthquake triggered the collapse of a mass of ice from Mount Huascaran, causing an avalanche and mudflow that buried the city of Yungay in what is considered one of the country's worst natural disasters.
