Peru: Prosecutor's Office finds US$100,000 at Callao Deputy Mayor's home

The Public Ministry raided a property at which S/360,000 (about US$100,000) in cash was found in the possession of Callao Province Deputy Mayor, Cesar Perez Barriga.

The money was found within the framework of an operation carried out by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office against Organized Crime, as part of a confidential investigation.

This operation involved the search of four properties.

The aforementioned amount was found in one of them. The bills were in the possession of Perez Barriga.

Likewise, it was reported that the origin of the money was not justified or accredited in the course of this operation.

The bills were confiscated, so that the corresponding proceedings can continue being carried out.

This operation was led by Prosecutor Juan Alberto Orihuela and coordinated by Superior Prosecutor Jorge Chavez.

Background

Before becoming Callao Province Deputy Mayor, Perez Barriga held a similar position in Ventanilla district, also in Callao region.

In both jurisdictions he has held the aforementioned position under Mayor Pedro Spadaro.

In 2020, Perez Barriga ran for a seat in Congress representing Alianza Para el Progreso (Alliance for Progress) party.
