Peru Prosecutor: Ex-Lima Mayor's legal situation could change

16:15 | Lima, May. 6.

Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group Coordinator Rafael Vela on Monday affirmed the legal situation of ex-Lima Mayor Susana Villaran (2011-2014) —who is involved in the Odebrecht corruption case— could change due to the progress made in the investigations on her.

However, the possible request to change Villaran's situation —who is currently under appearance with restrictions— depends on the Prosecutor in charge Carlos Puma.

Likewise, Prosecutor Vela affirmed significant progress has been made in the probe against her thanks to the delivery of information from former Odebrecht and OAS executives' testimonies.

In this sense, the data must be processed and corroborated by Prosecutor Puma, he indicated.

"Therefore, according to us (the Prosecutor's Office), the origin is illegal," Prosecutor Vela expressed.

Collaboration agreement

As is known, the Brazilian construction giant admitted to having paid millions in bribes to government officials in Peru, in order to secure public-works contracts.

As a result, Odebrecht benefited from over US$143 million between 2005 and 2014 in Peru, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

In addition, four ex-Presidents have been linked to the Brazilian company such as: Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), Alan Garcia (2006-2011), Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018)

Former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori —currently under preventive detention— also allegedly received money from Odebrecht for her 2011 campaign.
