Peru President visits Coastal El Niño victims

15:04 | Piura (Piura region), Mar. 27.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday took the opportunity to visit San Pablo shelter and talk to Catacaos district citizens during his trip to northern Piura region, one of the worst-hit by Coastal El Niño phenomenon last year.

Joined by regional authorities, the Head of State informed his visit was intended to listen to the population's demands and needs.

On the occasion, Mr. Vizcarra reiterated his commitment to working harder in order to improve the living conditions of all Peruvians, including Coastal El Niño victims.

"We are here not to make promises, but to assume commitments (…). The work is hard and arduous, but we must do it all together," the statesman remarked.

To this end, he noted it is necessary to engage in close and collective coordination with regional governments, municipalities, and legislators, with the purpose of overcoming difficulties and speeding up the implementation of the required projects.

"I am sure that this can be achieved with the support of all Peruvians. Thus, things become easy and possible (...)," he expressed.

According to Mr. Vizcarra, reconstruction efforts do not only require pickaxes and shovels, but also legal tools. Therefore, there must be a joint work and coordination with Congress, which issues the regulations.

Added to this is the active involvement of the population —through neighborhood councils, defense groups, universities, and professional associations— to monitor the works and make the necessary corrections to enhance the reconstruction process, the Peruvian leader explained.
