Peru Gov't to place emphasis on reconstruction, timelines to be set

12:04 | Piura (Piura region), Mar. 27.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday announced his administration will focus on the reconstruction of areas ravaged by Coastal El Niño phenomenon last year and that specific timelines shall be met.

The Head of State currently pays a visit to Piura, one of the regions hit by heavy rains, overflows, and floods in the summer of 2017.

Vizcarra explained the population will respect the waiting times if deadlines are set.

"We cannot raise expectations that everything will be done in the short term, but we must set timetables to be respected," the statesman expressed.

This process will be carried out in close coordination with sub-national authorities of the affected regions, as well as lawmakers representing the populations.

According to Vizcarra, the reconstruction must be a comprehensive process, in which part of the solution is the identification of deficiencies, in order to avoid ravages —like the ones occurred last year— in the following years.

Fast execution

The Peruvian leader also stressed the need to finance and implement projects at a fast pace.

"We cannot spend much time on the implementation of projects […]. A proper reconstruction won't be possible at last year's pace of execution," he pointed out.

Lastly, Mr. Vizcarra promised to return to Piura to monitor the progress of works and announced he will be visiting other regions affected by Coastal El Niño phenomenon, such as Tumbes, Lambayeque, La Libertad, and Ancash.
