Peru President urges approval of anti-tax evasion law

10:43 | Lima, Apr. 12.

President Martin Vizcarra has affirmed Peru must rely on an anti-tax evasion law aimed at preventing companies from cutting their contributions to the country.

Within this framework, the Head of State urged Congress to maintain in force the regulation (Legislative Decree 1421), enabling the State to collect disputed tax debts amounting to S/11 billion (around US$3.33 billion).

Likewise, the top official indicated the country welcomes private investments. Yet, the enterprises must pay taxes for the benefit of the Peruvian population, especially for the ones most in need

According to the statesman, tax evasion causes losses of hundreds of million Peruvian Soles each year.

"Money that ends up in tax havens or improperly increases the profit of some businesspeople and big corporations," he expressed in a televised address to the nation on Thursday night.

Furthermore, President Vizcarra stressed his administration encourages the approval of Regulation XVI or anti-evasion law's legal framework, which will demand businesspeople to fully comply with tax payments.

Economic concentrations

On the other hand, the Head of State pointed out the Government works on the initiative "Prior Control of Economic Concentrations Law" in order to prevent companies from merging and controlling the productive chains and holding consumers captive, as they would fix the prices.

"I urge Parliament to work for the benefit of consumers and to approve this project as soon as possible," the top official said.

"Our work is firm to fight corruption, rely on solid institutions, and issue regulations on taxes so private companies contribute what they truly should," he added.
