Peru President to address the nation on Independence Day

00:00 | Lima, Jul. 28.

President Martin Vizcarra will today address the nation on the occasion of the 197th anniversary of the Inca country's independence from Spain.

The important event will be held at Congress headquarters this morning.

The Head of State's speech will contain the main measures implemented by his administration during its first four months in office.

It will also feature the main announcements for the coming year exercising power. The fight against corruption stands out in this sense.

Thus, the Presidential Independence Day Speech is —without any doubt— the most important activity on the occasion.

As is known, Vizcarra took office on March 23 to replace resigning Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who had stepped down amid a political scandal.

Independence Day

Peru became independent from the clutches of Spanish rule on July 28, 1821. It was this day when the first edition of Peru's flag was unfurled by General Jose Francisco de San Martin.

Thus, this day serves to commemorate the Inca nation's independence.

The independence process came to an end with the Ayacucho Battle in December 1824.

People all over the country take part in celebrations at main squares, parks and street fairs, where delicious culinary delights can be enjoyed by locals and tourists who also join the celebrations.
