Peru President rejects speculation attempts on certain products

15:27 | Lima, Mar. 19.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra rejected speculation attempts by some merchants on some products such as lime, since its production has not stopped, and its supply is normal at markets.

"Regarding the speculation. There are good Peruvians, who constitute most citizens, but there is a small percentage of people who do not follow the rules or obey instructions," he expressed.

Just as there are citizens who behave incorrectly amid this emergency, thus forcing the police and Armed Forces to arrest them, the same occurs with some companies.

"Most companies in Peru act in the spirit of solidarity, they are making efforts to keep stores open and supplied; besides, everything is flowing with a sense of normality, but there is always room for speculation," the President stated.

For example, Mr. Vizcarra explained that during the first day of the quarantine, trucks that brought lime from northern regions had some degree of difficulty during the trip, and the lime price increased immediately.

"Lime was on its way and there was no problem with its production. It cost up to S/12.00 (around US$3.36) per kilogram, now the price is S/2.00 (around US$0.56)," he said.

Then, the Head of State remarked that these types of situations will stabilize rapidly because production has not stopped.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.
