Peru President: Region's leaders to coordinate coronavirus actions via videoconference

16:12 | Lima, Mar. 12.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Thursday announced that his peers from the region coordinate a videoconference to exchange criteria and standardize decisions aimed at facing the emergency caused by the spread of COVID-19.

The Head of State affirmed that the coronavirus crisis and emergency denote an opportunity to correct attitudes and implement those "of order, respect, and hygiene."

Thus, citizens will be better prepared to face this emergency. He also suggested that —once the crisis is over— hygiene habits must be maintained.

"Let them (hygiene habits) remain as part of a cultural change required in the country to be better prepared, under any circumstance, (for such situations)," he stressed.

"If we all work in a united, responsible, and caring way, there will be successful results. I do not doubt that because —every time we Peruvians have been called on at difficult times— we have responded adequately and in solidarity," he emphasized.

Remarks were made at a press briefing following a Council of State meeting held at the Government Palace in Lima.

On the occasion, the President was joined by Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos, Judicial Branch Chair Jose Luis Lecaros, Congress' Prepatory Board Head Monica Saavedra, Attorney General Zoraida Avalos, Constitutional Court Chairwoman Marianella Ledesma, and Ombudsman Walter Gutierrez.
