Peru President leads Council of State meeting

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra led the Council of State meeting at the Government Palace on Thursday to assess the current situation characterized by the coronavirus (COVID-19) spread, as well as to coordinate actions and measures on this issue.

The Council of State is the body that brings together the highest authorities of the three branches of State. They are the President of the Republic, as well as the chairs of Congress and the Judiciary. The heads of the Public Ministry and the Constitutional Court usually attend such events.

These meetings aim to discuss issues of high urgency for the country.

Prior to the meeting, the Judiciary, the Public Ministry, the Offices of the Comptroller General and the Ombudsman requested the Executive Branch to convene a Council of State, in order to analyze the current situation.

In an official letter submitted to President Vizcarra, the aforementioned institutions expressed their message of support as response to this delicate situation the country is going through due to COVID-19 cases.

Thanks to a Council of State, the tasks linked to its members will be better synchronized. In addition, a message of unity and commitment will be sent to citizens.

On the occasion, the President was joined by Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos, Judicial Branch Chair Jose Luis Lecaros, Congress' Prepatory Board Head Monica Saavedra, Attorney General Zoraida Avalos, Constitutional Court Chairwoman Marianella Ledesma, and Ombudsman Walter Gutierrez.
