The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Tuesday led a ceremony to pay tribute to courageous Peruvian Navy officer Gustavo Manuel Valladares Neyra, who died in a narco-terrorist attack in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM) a day earlier.

The remains of the man in uniform arrived this afternoon at Air Group No. 8 in Callao, where the tribute was paid and a liturgy was held.

The relatives of the deceased officer and colleagues from the Peruvian Navy also attended the event.

In addition, Defense Minister Nuria Esparch and senior officers of the Armed Forces were present at the ceremony.

On Monday night, the Joint Command of the Armed Forces reported that alleged narco-terrorist criminals had attacked Navy vessels in Puerto Palmeras, a town located in Vizcatan del Ene district, Satipo Province (Junin region).

The attack left one member of the Armed Forces dead and three others wounded. The latter receive specialized medical care.
