Peru President highlights need for Executive, Legislative Branches to work together

16:09 | Lima, May. 15.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Friday affirmed that the Executive and Legislative Branches must unite to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as for the approval of laws that benefit the population.

"We have to fight this disease together (...), there is no reason to create a division between the two powers," he expressed.

In the case of the reform for a new pension system, the Head of State considered this initiative should not be in charge of a single institution. Thus, he stressed, the bill that the Executive Branch had sent to Congress considered establishing a mixed commission composed of both powers' representatives.

In this sense, the top official said that a report on the diagnosis of the entire pension system —which had been crafted over the last year— was delivered to Parliament.

Furthermore, the statesman affirmed that there is a willingness to work together with Congress. However, he regretted that the initiative was shelved.

"We can express our discrepancies, but we insist that we will work hand-in-hand with the Legislative Branch, hand-in-hand with as many institutions as possible, and hand-in-hand with the population to combat this disease," he stated.

Lastly, he assured that it is not about triumphalism or becoming too confident because —as he stressed— people should not let their guard down in the fight against the pandemic.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the measure was extended thru May 24.

Friday marks the sixty-first day of mandatory social isolation in Peru.
