Peru President: Energy-Mines Min resignation has been accepted

13:36 | Lima, Feb. 10.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra informed on Monday that he has already accepted the resignation of the Minister of Energy and Mines Juan Carlos Liu.

"(…) The decision to accept his resignation has been made," the President told reporters from Lima's peripheral Villa El Salvador district where he supervised the actions carried out by the Executive Branch to continue assisting the gas tanker truck deflagration victims and their relatives. Said accident occurred on January 23.

According to the Head of State, the details of the recent allegations against Liu deserve an investigation to determine the level of responsibility.

On Sunday night, investigate journalism TV show Panorama reported that Liu —through his company Conasac— had provided consultancy services to Brazilian company Odebrecht.

Concerning this matter, Liu said he had been hired for specific energy regulation services when Odebrecht was not facing public questioning either in Peru or abroad.

He also said that —in 2012— Cosanac received the request of the Deputy Ministry of Energy in order to prepare a technical report aimed at determining if the Southern Gas Pipeline Project was self-sustaining or if it required co-financing.
