Peru President calls for culture of disaster prevention

13:18 | Yungay (Ancash region), May. 31.

President Martin Vizcarra on Friday urged Peruvians to develop a culture of prevention to address natural disasters that may occur in the earthquake-prone Andean country.

He stressed the need to involve citizens first, since —in his opinion— they are supposed to take the necessary steps to reduce risks before quakes or climate-related disasters.

For instance, the Peruvian leader emphasized the importance of having an emergency backpack at home and advised people not to settle along river channels, as these areas are most prone to landslides.

The Head of State traveled to Yungay (Ancash region) to attend a ceremony in tribute to 1970 earthquake victims.

Vizcarra stopped his speech —at 10:00 AM (local time)— to participate in the National Earthquake and Tsunami Drill and follow the security staff as they carried out the preparedness exercise.
