Peru holds nationwide earthquake and tsunami drill

Peruvian citizens participated in the National Earthquake and Tsunami Drill held throughout the Andean nation on Friday morning.

The preparedness exercise simulated a large magnitude earthquake and got people in coastal areas prepared in case of a tsunami.


Organized by the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci), the practice kicked off at 10:00 AM (local time). 

It should be noted Peru lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for seismic upheavals and volcanic eruptions.

Precisely on Sunday, an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale hit Loreto region in the country's northern Amazon. The seismic event took place at 2:41 AM according to Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP).

The movement was felt in Lima, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Cajamarca, Loreto, Junin, San Martin, as well as in neighboring countries Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil.
