Peru President attends ceremony marking 50 years since Yungay quake

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Sunday participated in a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1970 earthquake in Yungay city (Ancash region).

The Head of State was accompanied by Ministers Victor Zamora (Health), Gaston Rodriguez (Interior), and Martin Benavides (Education).

The ceremony was held at Huaraz Main Square, where the flag was raised at half-mast in tribute to the victims of this devastating event. 

The attendees observed social distancing measures in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As is known, the 1970 earthquake covered the whole city of Yungay (Ancash region) on a day like today, claiming more than 70,000 lives.

Coronavirus Aid 
 
During his visit, the Peruvian leader plans to supervise multisectoral actions to cope with the coronavirus pandemic.

It must be noted that medical supplies have been brought to the area in order to optimize protection and improve the performance of health professionals in the fight against this disease.
