15:41 | Brasilia (Brazil), Dec. 31.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra has landed in Brasilia, Brazil to participate in President-elect Jair Bolsonaro's inauguration ceremony.

The dignitary arrived on Monday accompanied by Peru's First Lady Maribel Diaz.

During his absence, Peru's Vice-President Mercedes Araoz will take over the presidential office.

In an interview he gave shortly before leaving for Brazil, Vizcarra assured his visit is aimed at maintaining good relations with the neighboring country.

The top official affirmed he is respectful of Brazilians' decision to pick a right-wing president and that Peru's foreign policy is to have good relations with neighboring countries, independent of their ideological position.

"We have to get along well with Brazil, a neighbor of ours with which we share the longest border. We need an adequate foreign policy. To that end, we will head to that country and respect the population's decision to opt for a right-wing ideological orientation," he stated.
