Peru President: Anticorruption fight to continue no matter what

14:31 | Bellavista (San Martin region), Apr. 9.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday affirmed he will continue fighting corruption "no matter what" since it hampers the country's growth and the implementation of further projects in favor of the population.

Speaking from San Martin region —where he supervised construction works on the Tocache – Juanjui highway— the President said this project proves a good job can be done.

Mr. Vizcarra is fulfilling a work agenda in San Martin, joined by Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva, as well as Ministers Edmer Trujillo (Transport and Communications) and Daniel Alfaro (Education).

The Peruvian leader recalled he visited the place a year ago when he served as Transport and Communications Minister.

At that time, he realized this stretch was crucial for the region since it served to connect towns, facilitate the transfer of products, and ensure public services.

The project was estimated at S/455 million (about US$140.6 million), but he was told to increase the budget because the final price always increases by about 10%, that is to say to S/490 million (about US$151.5 million).

"That was customary. I said why we should increase the budget. We made changes in the bidding procedure, and the budget ended up being S/410 million. This leads us to work honestly and save every last penny," he affirmed.

Peru's top official noted that greater resources would be available for riverside works and bridges, among others, if the same effort is made across the State.
