The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Saturday confirmed that Oscar Ugarte will become the new Health Minister of Peru, following the recent resignation of Pilar Mazzetti.

In an interview with RPP, the Head of State indicated that the swearing-in ceremony will be held today.

Within this framework, the top official stressed that the new Cabinet member has experience in the health sector, arguing that this was taken into account for his appointment.

Likewise, the statesman stressed that Ugarte has agreed to assume the post "despite the short time that remains ahead," as the Transition Government will complete its term in office on July 28.

Asked why the aforementioned physician has been summoned to replace the resigning official, he mentioned a conversation that he had the day before with Peru's soccer team coach Ricardo Gareca about the complications derived from replacing players in a team.

"When we are in a crisis situation, what we try to do is bring in an experienced player, whom we already know, one who can integrate quickly and work in the team," he said, adding that Ugarte has those skills.

Besides, the physician had already suffered from COVID-19, he indicated.

In his opinion, Ugarte —who had served as minister between 2008 and 2011— "will be a worthy successor of Pilar Mazzetti, to whom we Peruvians should be grateful."
