President Martin Vizcarra on Friday affirmed the Amazon area requires articulated efforts —undertaken by the nations that share its natural forests— in order to quickly respond to its protection, as well as to possible natural disasters.

According to the Head of State, the strategy must be changed, so declarations can be turned into actions instead of remaining just as good intentions.

"We must work together and be aware that the Amazon is suffering much more than before due to the impacts of climate change," he expressed.

Likewise, the top official underlined Peru is the fourth country in the world and the second in Latin America hosting the largest area of tropical rainforest.

"However, we have lost around 8 million hectares of rainforest," the statesman added.

In this sense, he pointed out Peru openly fights illegal mining —which pollutes the Amazon— and has allocated resources in order to recover the natural areas.

Furthermore, President Vizcarra urged his counterparts to set short, medium, and long-term goals with the purpose of finding adequate solutions concerning environment protection.

At the end of the gathering, the dignitaries signed the Pact of Leticia for the Amazonia.

Remarks were made during the Amazon Summit.

The event was also attended by Presidents Ivan Duque (Colombia), Lenin Moreno (Ecuador), Evo Morales (Bolivia), Vice-President Michael Ashwin Adhin (Suriname), Foreign Affairs Minister Ernesto Araujo (Brazil), and Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman (Guyana).
