Peru: Police return US$4,000 to foreign tourist who lost it in Machu Picchu

A tourist from Singapore thanked the Peruvian National Police after agents found and returned a handbag containing US$4,000, personal documents, and a mobile phone that the visitor had lost in Machu Picchu Pueblo. She had traveled there to visit the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

The Cusco Police Region reported on Wednesday, April 22, that the incident occurred on Monday, April 20, when law enforcement agents discovered the misplaced item while carrying out their duties.

After conducting the corresponding inspection, police confirmed that the bag contained US$4,000, an iPhone 17 Pro Max, credit cards, and several valuable belongings.

Afterward, agents launched the necessary procedures to determine ownership of the property, successfully identifying Ling Lee Yean as the owner.


She had arrived in Machu Picchu Pueblo as part of her visit to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The handbag was returned to the visitor, who had been distressed by the loss.

The tourist expressed her deep gratitude for what she described as the honest and timely work of the police.
