Peru PM: We are a democratic Government

11:03 | Lima, Sep. 20.

Peru's Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva on Thursday affirmed that Martin Vizcarra's Government is democratic and respectful of the Constitution.

"We do not intend to stage a coup d'état, and we will never do so because we have a democratic standpoint, and what happened last night (the approval of the confidence vote) is a triumph of Peru," the official told ATV local channel.

Likewise, he confirmed the Executive Power does not play a controlling role.

Villanueva affirmed that he and President Vizcarra are democratic and will never use weapons to impose their will, "we'd rather use reason as a persuasive tool."

On the other hand, the Cabinet chief rejected the idea that the confidence motion was a smokescreen and expressed confidence in the start of the process to build bridges between the Executive and Legislative branches towards a common agenda.

"There is no screen, we are moving directly to things, just as it should be. So, we are not going to waste time in qualifiers or in giving importance to the issue," he stated.

In his view, if Congress does not fulfill the political commitment to passing the three remaining bills —on lawmakers' re-election, bicameral parliamentary system, and political parties' private financing— before October 4, it would mean Parliament's suicide.

"This would mean democracy and political agreements (in Peru) are worthless," he added.
