Peru PM: Govt respects decision allowing dissolved-Congress members to run as candidates

16:19 | Lima, Nov. 12.

The Peruvian Government respects the autonomy and the decision made by the National Election Board (JNE) to allow the participation —as candidates— of dissolved-Congress members in the January 2020 parliamentary elections, Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos affirmed on Tuesday.

Within this framework, he recalled that —in previous statements— the Executive Branch had always said the JNE would have the last word on the issue.

"We have read the statement (…). Within a rule of law, as has been the National Government's stance, we respect the autonomy and the decision the electoral entity has made," he underlined.

The decision considered that the rule established in Article 90-A of the Constitution cannot be applied to this electoral process due to its "extraordinary nature."
