Peru PM: Early general elections proposal is a gesture of benevolence

10:53 | Lima, Jul. 29.

Prime Minister Salvador del Solar has affirmed President Martin Vizcarra's proposal —to call early general elections by 2020— represents a gesture of benevolence for the sake of the country.

The initiative will have to be made official through a Congress' constitutional reform to be consulted with citizens via referendum.

In this sense, the cabinet chief lamented that the announcement was not well received by some legislators.

"Before that, the Head of State was talking about the dissatisfaction he felt concerning the way the political reform was handled, specifically the immunity issue," Del Solar told Dia D TV show.

Therefore, the impression that the top official would dissolve Parliament was involuntarily given.

The high-ranking official hopes the announcement can be calmly assessed in the next hours, noting it is not a proposal against Congress, as the President also requested it to shorten his presidential term from 2021 to 2020.

Likewise, he recalled that —in recent times— there has been friction between Parliament and the Executive more than once.

"I believe it is not the moment to discuss who has created the conflict. Each one of us has an opinion, and what we are trying to do is offering a way out of the current situation," the Prime Minister added.

Furthermore, Del Solar pointed out the proposal is within the constitutional framework.

On the other hand, he indicated Peruvian citizens are fed up with the political activity in the Inca country. Thus, President Vizcarra would cut short his term in office in order to find a solution for the well-being of the nation
