Peruvian Prime Minister Walter Martos on Saturday urged citizens to act responsibly and not to neglect the biosafety measures, thus avoiding a possible fresh outbreak or second wave of the novel coronavirus.

"We have to take care of ourselves (…), by optimizing the hospital response with early treatment, thus preventing regrowth or a possible second wave in the country," he expressed.

The head of the Ministerial Cabinet said that —although the rates of infections, hospitalization, and deaths linked to the novel coronavirus are decreasing— the pandemic is not over, and therefore citizens must act responsibly.

The donated batch of mechanical ventilators, produced in the United States, are state-of-the-art, compact, portable, and will provide the country with greater flexibility in treating coronavirus patients.

"I reiterate our gratitude to the Chargé d'Affaires of the United States Embassy in Peru, Denison Offutt, and through him to President Trump and the people of the United States," he said.

Furthermore, the Cabinet chief expressed wishes for the speedy recovery of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has recently been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Held in Lima, the delivery ceremony also saw the presence of Ministers Pilar Mazzetti (Health) and Mario Lopez (Foreign Affairs).

As is known, the United States donated the first 250 ventilators to Peru last June. To date, the aid provided by the U.S. to the South American nation exceeds US$25 million.
