Peru: Pedro Castillo preventive detention period extended for 14 months

10:08 | Lima, Jun. 11.

The Judiciary has extended for 14 months the preventive detention imposed on ex-President Pedro Castillo, accused of the crime of rebellion and others.

The extended detention period is due to the fact that the proceedings against Castillo are in the intermediate stage, the Judiciary indicated on Monday.

It specified that the measure will be in force from June 7, 2024, to August 6, 2025.

This decision comes despite requests from the ex-president's lawyer not to extend the term.

54-year-old Castillo remains detained at Barbadillo Prison in Lima's Ate district. He is involved in two legal proceedings simultaneously.

The Attorney General's Office had requested the Judiciary to extend the preventive detention of ex-President Castillo over the coup d'état case.

As is known, Pedro Castillo is accused of the alleged crime of rebellion. He faces a request for 34 years in prison.
