Peru: Parliament commission passes draft bill on lawmakers' re-election

18:26 | Lima, Oct. 3.

Peruvian Congress' Constitution Commission on Wednesday approved —by a majority of votes— the lawmakers' re-election draft bill submitted by the Executive Branch.

Article 90-A had to be changed to make this possible, the Parliament said a statement via Twitter.

This way, legislators would not be re-elected to the same position for a new term.

Furthermore, the Commission adopted an opinion on modified articles seeking the return to a bicameral parliamentary system

The two constitutional reforms that have congressional approval thus far have to do with the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) and political parties' private financing.

Therefore, two out of the four draft bills —aimed at fighting corruption— are ready to be put to a referendum on December 9.

As is known, the release of audios containing phone conversations that involved judges, entrepreneurs, and National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) members led to a scandal in the justice system. Thus, the Vizcarra administration intends to implement a positive change in Peru.

On the other hand, Congress Chairman Daniel Salaverry announced the Board of Spokespersons has agreed to pass the Executive's proposed reforms before October 4.
