Electronic commerce has grown at two-digit rates over the last seven years, totaling US$2.8 billion in 2016 and doubling its sales since 2013, Penta Analytics Business Manager Erick Mendez said on Wednesday.

In well-developed e-commerce markets such as China, the United States and India, online sales account for up to 25% of total sales.

Therefore, the companies' challenge does not imply that one channel overcomes another, but how to manage the shopper experience in a multi-channel context (various channels like physical stores, e-commerce and call centers).

The focus remains on the shopping experience, based on the understanding of cost of living and special offer prices, as well as on relevant product features, and personalized options that result from the integration of digital and physical worlds.

Online sales expansion in Peru has been influenced by different variables like Internet access, smartphone penetration, and mistrust in payment methods among consumers.

Peruvian online shoppers are between 25 and 45 years old. Men spend S/170 (around US$52) and women S/125 (around US$38) on average.

Their preferences include technology, accessories, white goods and trips.
