Peru: Non-traditional exports to grow 10% in 2020

00:00 | Lima, Dec. 18.

Peru's non-traditional exports will continue their upward trend of recent years showing a 10% growth in 2020, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez has projected.

The Cabinet member affirmed that agro-industry will not be the only sector with strong performance, but will be joined by others that also show continuous improvement and whose core market is the United States —such as garment, metallurgical, and metal-mechanic segments.

"Let us remember that the United States and China announced a partial agreement, which will remove some clouds (of confusion) on a global scale. This is very positive. We hope this partial agreement will be concluded to reach a final deal soon," he expressed.

According to the minister, this will allow the two giant economies to focus on a mutually beneficial trade, which will bring benefits to the global economy, including Peru —a small economy with great potential.

As for the performance of Peruvian exports in 2019, Vasquez noted that the global economic slowdown strongly influenced the results, especially in the case of mining exports.

"This situation caused shipments to fall between 4% and 5% this year, compared to 2018 (when these totaled US$47 billion)," the minister said.

"However, exports with greater added value (non-traditional ones) —such as those to the United States— continue to grow," he concluded.
