Peru: New Health Minister sworn in

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Saturday morning administered the oath of office to Oscar Ugarte, who has become Minister of Health.

Thus, he replaces Pilar Mazzetti, who stepped down from the post a day earlier.

The ceremony was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Biography

Oscar Ugarte was born in the city of Pucallpa in 1944.

The new Health sector's chief served in said portfolio for the first time from October 2008 to July 2011.

From January to December 2002, he was Deputy Minister of Health.

Ugarte is a surgeon graduated from the San Fernando Faculty of Medicine at the Lima-based San Marcos University.

He holds a master's degree in Public Policy Management from the University of Barcelona (Spain).

In addition, Ugarte worked as advisor to various projects and initiatives related to the health sector, promoted by Desco and USAID, which were developed from 1997 to 2008.

The new Minister had been serving as the Social Health Insurance System's (EsSalud) Operations Manager.

While in this position last year, he suffered from COVID-19 and was hospitalized for several days.
