Peru: Modernization of Salaverry Port to boost cruise arrivals

14:11 | Trujillo (La Libertad region), Aug. 17.

The modernization of Salaverry Port will boost tourist cruise arrivals in northern Trujillo City, State-run Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion) informed Friday.

"A boost to tourism will definitely contribute to creating more jobs, expanding the economy, and improving citizens' quality of life," Trujillo Province Tourism Department Deputy Manager Miriam Gayoso expressed.

Between January and April this year, 7,817 cruise tourists arrived at Salaverry Port.

This figure represents a significant increase compared to the same period in 2017, and these numbers may increase thanks to the port modernization.

Consorcio Transportadora Salaverry (CTS) —which was awarded the project last May— will carry out the port's infrastructure modernization works, thus improving its management and easing tourist flows into the area.

It must be noted said infrastructure was built back in 1960.

According to the institution, working with authorities is essential to promote Trujillo's tourist attractions such as Historic Center of Trujillo, Chan Chan Citadel, Moche Temples of the Sun and the Moon, and El Brujo Archaeological Site, among others.

The awardee must also carry out works to handle container and bulk cargoes of all exporters and importers, who require either of these transport modes for their goods.

Northern La Libertad region's exporters will be able to save around US$500 per container (logistical costs) compared to the prices they currently pay to mobilize their cargoes through Callao and Paita, CTS estimates.

The Modernization of Salaverry Port Multipurpose Terminal Project will require an investment of US$229 million and be granted for 30 years, starting from the concession contract signing.
