It has been 31 years since Chan Chan —capital of the Chimor Kingdom— was inscribed on UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites.
For this reason, the Special Project for the
Chan Chan Archaeological Complex held a series of cultural and awareness activities, as part of the celebrations.
According to the project's head, Maria Elena Cordova, celebratory activities included school visits to the site, parades, collaborative clean-up efforts, craft workshops, a drawing and painting competition, among others.
"The
Chan Chan Archaeological Zone was inscribed on UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites on November 28, 1986, considering it is a construction masterpiece of the human creative genius and evidence of Chimor Kingdom's cultural tradition," she noted.
Cultural activities involved the participation of Trujillo, Huanchaco and La Esperanza inhabitants.
Another highlight was the photographic exhibition "Let's Celebrate the Pride of Having a World Heritage," which featured six information panels on Chan Chan's universal values and public investment projects undertaken in the area.
Held at Chan Chan Site Museum, the exhibit portrays 12 infographics with themes related to Chimu Culture, cultural continuity,
archaeological research, preservation,
awareness and dissemination, among other topics that emphasize the importance of this site.
Chan Chan
The Chimu Kingdom, with Chan Chan as its capital, reached its apogee in the 15th century, not long before falling to the Incas.
The planning of this huge city —the largest in pre-Columbian Americas— reflects a strict political and social strategy, marked by the city's division into nine 'citadels' or 'palaces' forming autonomous units.
