Peru: Members of dissolved Congress to lose parliamentary immunity in 30 days

18:05 | Lima, Oct. 1.

Members of the recently-dissolved Congress of Peru will lose their parliamentary immunity in 30 days, Anti-Corruption Prosecutor Julio Arbizu affirmed Tuesday.

According to Article 93 of the Constitution, lawmakers cannot be legally processed or imprisoned without a previous authorization from Congress or the Permanent Commission, since the moment they are elected until a month after they leave office.

Therefore, the expiry period for their immunity has already started.

The decision was taken after Parliament denied its confidence to two Councils of Ministers of the Government elected for the 2016–2021 period.
