Peru: Madre de Dios region producers export 25 tons of cacao to Italy

12:17 | Lima, Jun. 26.

For the first time, producers from Peru's rainforest Madre de Dios region directly exported 25 tons of organic cacao harvested in the buffer area belonging to Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja Sonene National Park to Italy.

In this sense, Tambopata Candamo Cooperative (Coopaser) —composed of 339 farmers— decided to confront deforestation and produce shade-grown fine flavor cacao

The cargo left from Callao Port to Europe, in order to reach ICAM SPA company's plant, recognized in the chocolate and baking industry on a global scale.

The production of cacao is carried out within the framework of Project REDD+Tambopata-Bahuaja, which boosts productive initiatives in Madre de Dios region, where 3,730 ha of the reserve have been saved from deforestation.

This project relies on the technical accompaniment and assistance of the Association for the Research and Comprehensive Development (AIDER) and is financed by Althelia Mirova

Likewise, the Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry's (Minagri) National Forest and Wildlife Service (Serfor) supports these initiatives that promote the recovery and conservation of forests.

On the other hand, the Environment Ministry's (Minam) National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) coordinates the management of the reserve and national park.

Within this framework, Environment Minister Lucia Ruiz noted the multi-sectoral effort articulation aimed at repeating these experiences on the sustainable use of Amazon forests.

AIDER Executive Director Jaime Nalvarte, Serfor Executive Director Alberto Gonzales-Zuñiga, and Sernanp Head Pedro Gamboa were present during the shipping.
