Fuerza Popular presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori on Thursday agreed to debate with Peru Libre opponent Pedro Castillo on May 1 in Chota Province (Cajamarca region), which is Castillo's hometown.

"It doesn't scare me. I accept the new condition of going to Chota on Saturday," she wrote on Twitter.

As Fujimori announced this afternoon, her party's vice-presidential candidate Luis Galarreta will be attending the meeting on the National Elections Board (JNE) debates along with Peru Libre party representatives.

"I have commissioned him to establish with them the rules of the debate scheduled for Saturday," she said.

According to Fujimori, Castillo "continues to run away and avoid the debate, putting new excuses and conditions" by proposing that it be Saturday and not Sunday as it had been initially proposed.

"I hope that candidate Castillo does not continue to shun or make absurd excuses to run away. This is not Cuba or Venezuela yet. Nonetheless, he wants to set the date, the field, all the players, and now also the referees. Let the JNE set the rules. Don't run away, Pedro," she added.

As is known, Pedro Castillo will face Fuerza Popular presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori in the runoff election to be held on June 6.

Update at 5:00 p.m. (local time): Pedro Castillo on Thursday afternoon suspended his campaign events scheduled for today in Lima due to health problems. He was admitted to Lima-based Clinica La Luz.
