Peruvian President Ollanta Humala on Wednesday met with a senior Japanese envoy to discuss ways to deepen bilateral relations and boost cooperation between the two countries.
Japanese parliamentarian Yasutoshi Nishimura arrived in Lima yesterday as special envoy of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to attend celebrations marking the 140th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Peru and Japan.
During the meeting in the Ambassadors' Hall of the Government Palace, Humala and Nishimura renewed their countries' commitment to broaden the scope of bilateral relations and take them to a higher level.
"Peru is the largest recipient of Japanese cooperation in Latin America, which is reflected in active participation in infrastructure projects and social and environmental initiatives, as well as the presence of experts and volunteers. For us, Japan has been instrumental in promoting the transfer of knowledge and technology," the Peruvian leader said after the meeting.
For his part, Nishimura said he was happy with the excellent bilateral relationship between Peru and Japan, and added that through the ongoing Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement negotiations the two countries are working on the adoption of new rules for trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific basin.
