Lawyer Ruben Vargas resigned from his post as Minister of Interior on Wednesday afternoon.

According to his resignation letter, 49-year-old Vargas affirmed that he had assumed the challenge of leading the Interior sector in a critical scenario.

Likewise, the former official stressed that his designation had responded to the need to ensure that the National Police of Peru regains citizens' trust and guarantees the democratic transition to the new government. Said administration will be chosen in the 2021 general elections and take office on July 28.

"I present to your office my immediate resignation as head of the Ministry of Interior. We are fully aware that this effort to improve our National Police of Peru does not end with the appointment of a minister," he wrote in the epistle addressed to Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez.

The resigning official believes that the measures implemented during his time in office —despite their absolute legality and urgent need— affected the mood of some political sectors.

Vargas also thanked Bermudez for the trust granted to him during his tenure as an Executive Branch member.
