In November 2023, Peru officially assumed the Presidency of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum for the third time. Under its lead, more than 160 meetings of various levels will be held in five Peruvian regions in 2024.

2008 Presidency

Peru assumed the APEC Presidency for the first time in 2008.

The Presidents of the United States, George W. Bush; China, Hu Jintao; Russia, Dmitry Medvedev; and the Prime Minister of Japan, Taro Aso; among other leaders; arrived in the South American country to attend the APEC forum Leaders' Summit back then.

According to estimates, the 2008 APEC forum generated US$18 million in revenue from food consumption, tourism, hotels, and various purchases.

Approximately 12,000 delegates participated in the 128 meetings held during the Peruvian Presidency.

2016 Presidency

In 2016, Peru assumed the Presidency of APEC for the second time.

For the Leaders' Summit, the heads of state and government of the 21 economies that are part of this trade bloc arrived in this country, including the Presidents of the United States, Barack Obama; Russia, Vladimir Putin; China, Xi Jinping; as well as the Prime Ministers of Japan, Shinzo Abe; and Canada, Justin Trudeau.

Personalities such as billionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg; Chinese businessman and Alibaba e-commerce website founder Jack Ma; as well as more than 1,300 businesspeople also landed in Peru for this event.

During this Presidency, more than 160 technical and sectoral meetings were held, with the participation of 15,000 delegates.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this will generate the creation of temporary jobs and have a positive impact on various local and regional economies —particularly in the accommodation, food, transportation sectors, and other services linked to the organization of these events.
